What Makes Our Children’s Dentistry Different

Children have unique perspectives and needs, and not every dental practice is equally equipped to meet them. At Uxbridge Dental Specialists, the combination of a specialist-trained pediatric dentist and two of only approximately 50 certified dental anaesthesiology specialists in all of Canada, means that every child who comes to our practice receives care that reflects the very highest standard available in Ontario, just a short drive from home.

Some children manage dental treatment delivered in a traditional manner very comfortably from their very first visit. Others need more time, more patience, a specialized clinical approach, or the support of sedation or general anaesthesia to receive their treatment safely and without distress. Whatever your child’s particular needs, our specialists and staff consistently approach every young patient with genuine compassion, deep experience, and individualized care.

We are proud to offer children’s dentistry, awake or asleep, at our Uxbridge office.

Sleep Dentistry For Children In Uxbridge And Durham Region

For children who experience significant dental anxiety, have special needs, are very young, or require more extensive treatment than a traditional appointment allows, sleep dentistry is often the most appropriate and compassionate solution. At Uxbridge Dental Specialists, this option is available at the highest level found anywhere in Ontario.

Two of our dentists hold certification as specialists in dental anaesthesiology, a designation held by only approximately 50 dentists in all of Canada. This rare qualification allows our anaesthesiologists to administer any level of anaesthesia, from mild sedation to complete general anaesthesia, customized to your child’s specific age, weight, medical history, and needs, and to adjust it in real time throughout the procedure.

Our youngest patients typically fall asleep gently by breathing an anaesthetic agent through a small flavoured mask, with no needles required at the outset. Once your child is fully and comfortably asleep, an appropriately small IV line is started and any additional monitors are quietly placed. Throughout the entire procedure and into the recovery period, your child’s vital signs including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, respirations, and temperature are continuously monitored by our dental anaesthesiologist and registered nurse.

Most children are ready to go home within 30 to 60 minutes of completing their procedure. Treatment plans that would otherwise require multiple appointments spread across months can often be completed in one carefully coordinated session, saving your family significant time and reducing the stress of repeated visits for a child who finds the experience difficult.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sleep Dentistry for Adults

Does insurance cover sleep dentistry?2026-06-03T20:11:02+00:00

Many insurance plans provide partial or full coverage for the dental procedures performed under anaesthesia, though coverage for the anaesthesia itself varies by plan. As a courtesy to our patients, we file insurance claims electronically and are happy to help you understand and maximize your benefits.

How much does sleep dentistry cost in Ontario?2026-06-03T20:10:39+00:00

The cost of your treatment is determined by the specific dental procedures performed and the associated anaesthesia time. Our office follows the specialist fee guide set out by the Ontario Dental Association. We accept nearly all insurance plans and are happy to help you maximize your coverage. Please contact our team to discuss the specifics of your treatment plan and associated fees.

How long will I be at the office?2026-06-03T20:10:25+00:00

Most patients are ready to go home within 30 to 60 minutes of completing their procedure. You will need a responsible adult of at least 18 years of age to escort you home, and work or other activities should not be scheduled for the day of your appointment.

Will I really be completely asleep?2026-06-03T20:10:06+00:00

If you prefer, yes. Most of our patients receive their dental care while fully asleep, eliminating any awareness of sights, sounds, or sensations during treatment. Others prefer a deeply relaxed, sedated state without full general anaesthesia. Together with your anaesthesiologist, you will choose the level that is right for your needs and comfort.

How is this different from sedation dentistry?2026-06-03T20:09:42+00:00

Many dental offices advertise sedation dentistry, which typically involves a pill or laughing gas. These approaches may be inadequate in their effectiveness. Our certified dental anaesthesiologists offer the full spectrum of anaesthesia, from mild sedation to complete general anaesthesia, with real-time adjustment and continuous monitoring throughout. This is a fundamentally different and significantly more capable level of care.

Is sleep dentistry safe?2026-06-03T20:09:25+00:00

Yes. Safety is our highest priority, and it shapes every decision we make. Your vital signs are monitored continuously throughout your entire procedure and recovery by our dental anaesthesiologist and a registered nurse. Our anaesthesiologists hold the highest available certification in dental anaesthesiology in Canada, ensuring your care meets the most rigorous standards available.
