If your child’s dentist has mentioned sleep dentistry, or if you have been searching for a more comfortable alternative to traditional dental visits for your anxious or complex young patient, you are in the right place. Pediatric sleep dentistry is one of the most meaningful services available to families in Durham Region, and one of the least understood. This guide explains what it actually involves, who it is right for, and what parents can expect from the experience at Uxbridge Dental Specialists.

What Is Pediatric Sleep Dentistry?
Pediatric sleep dentistry refers to dental treatment performed while a child is sedated or under general anaesthesia, administered and monitored by a certified dental anaesthesiologist. It is not the same as oral sedation, which involves a child swallowing a pill or liquid to produce mild relaxation, and it is not the same as nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas.
Sleep dentistry at the specialist level means a trained anaesthesiologist manages your child’s level of consciousness throughout the entire procedure, adjusting the anaesthetic in real time based on your child’s individual response, the treatment being performed, and any changes that arise during the appointment. The result is a very safe, precisely managed experience that is simply not achievable with the sedation options available at most general dental offices.
How Is It Different from Regular Children’s Dentistry?
Regular pediatric dentistry works very well for children who are cooperative, comfortable with dental settings, and require straightforward treatment. A routine exam, cleaning, or small filling does not necessarily require anything beyond standard care and a warm, patient approach.
Sleep dentistry becomes the right choice when those conditions are not met. Some children cannot cooperate with treatment despite their best efforts, whether due to age, anxiety, a strong gag reflex, special needs, or the complexity of the treatment required. For these children, attempting to deliver dental care in a traditional way is not simply uncomfortable. It can compromise the quality of the treatment itself, and create negative associations with dental care that follow them for years.
The key difference is this: in regular pediatric dentistry, the dentist works around the child’s level of cooperation. In pediatric sleep dentistry, the anaesthesiologist creates the conditions for the dentist to work without that constraint, so the child receives the best possible care in the safest, most comfortable way available.
Who Performs Pediatric Sleep Dentistry at Uxbridge Dental Specialists?
This is one of the most important questions a parent can ask, and the answer at our practice is genuinely different from most.
Two of our dentists hold certification as specialists in dental anaesthesiology from the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario, a designation held by only approximately 50 dentists in all of Canada. Achieving this certification requires completing a formal multi-year residency, dedicating thousands of hours to supervised hands-on training, and successfully completing rigorous written and oral board examinations. It grants our anaesthesiologists the legal authority and clinical expertise to administer any level of anaesthesia, from mild sedation to full general anaesthesia, customized in real time to your child’s specific age, weight, medical history, and needs.
Our anaesthesiologists have collectively treated thousands of children across a wide range of ages and medical complexities. That depth of pediatric experience is not something that can be replicated by a general dentist who has completed a weekend sedation course.
Our pediatric dental specialist completed her specialty training at the University of Southern California. For parents in Port Perry, Whitby, Ajax, Stouffville, and across Durham Region, this means your child has access to a level of combined specialist expertise that is genuinely rare outside of a major urban centre, just a short drive from home.

Who Is Pediatric Sleep Dentistry Right For?
Sleep dentistry is not the right choice for every child, and it is not something we recommend when standard treatment will work well. It is, however, the most appropriate and compassionate option for a specific group of young patients.
Your child may benefit from pediatric sleep dentistry if they:
- Experience significant dental anxiety or fear that makes cooperation with treatment very difficult
- Are very young, typically under the age of 4 or 5, and unable to understand or tolerate dental procedures
- Have special needs, including autism, sensory processing disorders, developmental delays, or other conditions that make traditional dental treatment challenging or unsafe
- Require extensive treatment that cannot be reasonably completed across multiple traditional appointments
- Have a strong gag reflex that interferes with the delivery of dental care
- Have had a previous difficult or traumatic dental experience
- Require treatment that, for safety or quality reasons, is best performed without movement or interruption
If you are unsure whether your child falls into one of these categories, the best first step is a consultation. We assess every child individually, and we will only recommend sleep dentistry when it is genuinely the most appropriate option.
Is It Safe?
This is the question every parent asks, and it deserves a direct and honest answer: yes, when performed by appropriately trained and certified specialists, dental anaesthesia for children is safe.
The safety of any anaesthetic procedure depends entirely on the qualifications of the person administering it and the quality of the monitoring in place throughout. At Uxbridge Dental Specialists, both of those factors reflect the highest standard available.
Throughout the entire procedure and into the recovery period, your child’s vital signs including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, respirations, and temperature are continuously monitored by our dental anaesthesiologist and a registered nurse. Your child is never left unattended, and our team is trained to recognize and respond to any change in your child’s condition immediately.
The risk of complications from anaesthesia in a healthy child, when administered by a certified dental anaesthesiology specialist, is very low. Your child’s medical history is reviewed thoroughly at the consultation appointment, and any factors that could affect anaesthetic management are identified and planned for well in advance of the procedure.
What Does the Process Look Like?
The consultation
Before any treatment takes place, your child will attend a consultation appointment at our Uxbridge office. This is the appointment where we get to know your child and their specific needs, review their medical history and current medications, discuss the recommended treatment plan, and explain all anaesthetic options available. You will have the opportunity to ask every question on your mind, and nothing will proceed until you feel fully informed and confident.
At this appointment, you will also receive detailed pre-anaesthetic instructions covering fasting requirements, what to bring on the day of the procedure, and how to prepare your child at home.
The day of the procedure
Your child arrives at our office with an empty stomach, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Our team will welcome you, review everything one more time, and answer any final questions before the procedure begins.
For our youngest patients, the process of going to sleep is designed to be as gentle and non-threatening as possible. Children typically fall asleep by breathing an anaesthetic agent through a small flavoured mask. No needles are required at the outset. Once your child is fully and comfortably asleep, an appropriately small IV line is started and any additional monitors are quietly placed. The dental procedure then takes place efficiently, with your child completely comfortable and unaware throughout.
Recovery
Most children emerge from anaesthesia promptly. They are monitored closely throughout the recovery period, and most are ready to go home within 30 to 60 minutes of completing their procedure, once they have met our discharge criteria. School and extracurricular activities should not be scheduled for the day of the procedure.
Parents consistently tell us they were surprised by how smoothly the experience went and how quickly their child recovered.
What Procedures Can Be Completed Under Anaesthesia?
While your child sleeps comfortably, our pediatric dental specialist can complete a full range of dental services in a single visit, including:
- Exams and radiographs (x-rays)
- Cleanings and fluoride treatment
- Fillings, in white or silver
- Crowns, in white or stainless steel
- Pulpal therapy (baby root canals)
- Space maintainers
- Extractions
Treatment plans that would otherwise require multiple appointments spread across months can often be completed in one carefully coordinated session, saving your family significant time and reducing the stress of repeated visits for a child who finds dental care difficult.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most children are ready to go home within 30 to 60 minutes of completing their procedure. Some wake up quickly and are asking for a snack within minutes. Others are groggy for a little while longer. Both are completely normal.
Yes, significantly. Oral sedation, typically a drink or pill, offers a limited and imprecise level of relaxation that cannot be adjusted once administered. General anaesthesia, delivered and monitored by our certified specialists, provides a deeper, more precise, and fully manageable level of care appropriate for children who require it.
At your consultation, our team will provide you with detailed pre-anaesthetic instructions both verbally and in writing. The most important instruction involves fasting: your child must arrive with an empty stomach, following the specific guidelines provided. Speaking to your child calmly and positively about the appointment, focusing on the outcome rather than the process, also makes a meaningful difference.
Not at the outset. Our youngest patients fall asleep through a small flavoured mask. An IV line is started only once your child is fully and comfortably asleep, minimizing any distress at the beginning of the process.
We treat children from the age of 2 and up. The specific anaesthetic approach recommended will depend on your child’s age, weight, medical history, and the nature of the treatment required. Our anaesthesiologists are experienced with patients across a very wide age range.
If you are considering pediatric sleep dentistry for your child, or if your child’s dentist has recommended a specialist, we would be pleased to welcome you for a consultation. We take our time, answer every question, and ensure that every parent leaves feeling confident and fully prepared.
